🌸Chuntianle and Her Friend | My Scottish Friend Robert McCurdy | He Said, “I Will Only Sing with You
My Scottish friend Robert McCurdy has always left a deep impression on me.
We met while working on an international project. There were many colleagues from Spain in our team, and we often had meetings, discussions, and on-site inspections together. The atmosphere was always friendly and harmonious. Outside of work, we would chat and share laughs, and sometimes they even tried learning a few words in Chinese, like “hello,” which was really fun. We also once visited the Shaolin Temple in China together. Everyone was curious about the culture there, and our conversations never stopped along the way. That experience left a lasting impression on me.
One time, everyone suddenly wanted to eat Spanish food—a traditional dish made by frying potatoes and eggs together (something like a Spanish tortilla). After talking with the restaurant owner, I decided to step into the kitchen myself and try to make the dish. That day, many people gathered around, chatting, laughing, and tasting the food. It was lively and joyful.
Robert speaks English, surprisingly clearly, which made it easy for me to understand him, so I spent more time talking with him. He loves singing Careless Whisper, and he sings it so movingly, full of feeling.
On another occasion during a meal, he even sang a Chinese song, “Nine Hundred and Ninety-Nine Roses.” A girl wanted to join him in singing, but he firmly said he would only sing it with me. At that moment, I was truly touched.
I cherish friends like him—honest, steadfast, and trustworthy.
In life, some people may seem friendly, but when challenges arise, they back away like “fair-weather friends.” Compared to them, someone like Robert is truly rare.
Later, he returned to Scotland, and we never met again.
But every time I read the poem “A Red, Red Rose,” I think of him. That passionate and pure emotion always gently awakens the memory. I have even composed music for this poem, and I truly love the piece.
At that time, I enjoyed collecting stamps, and he thoughtfully gave me a stamp album filled with stamps. That gesture, like these memories, has been treasured by me ever since.
Some people may walk away, but they never truly leave.
